Powder coating is very durable and comes in a variety of chemistries and colors. Powder coatings are also environmentally friendly meaning they don’t contain any VOC’s or Volatile organic compounds which can be harmful to the environment.

While the image looks like baby powder piles in different colors. Its not much different, the powder coatings are electrostatically sprayed to a grounded part and then are cured at a temperature approx. 395F where the coating will cross link and melt into its final form. The main thing to keep in mind during the curing process is the temperature the supplier puts on the data sheet is part metal temperature. Your going to want a heat gun.

Powder coatings offer durability and depending on the chemistry you choose these coatings can be for both indoor and outdoor use. These coatings can also offer chemical resistance and insulation characteristics.  The variety these coatings offer make powder coatings a great solution and much more affordable than some of the other functional coating technologies.

If your looking for a fairly affordable coating that offers some form and function powder coating can usually get the job done. If your application requires more of a functional coating like thermoplastic, non-stick, or thermal barrier then powder coatings might not be the best fit. Don’t worry though… there is such a variety of coatings I’m sure there is something that will work.
